Yateley Silverbacks 53 – Aztecs Falcons 48
(12-15; 21-32; 41-39; 53-48)
Leading scorers:
Paul Howard 15; Becky Wellington 12; Tim Tostevin 8; Justin Hopley 5
Match summary:
The Falcons were on fire in the first phase and led by seven at 8-15. This advantage was extended to 11 at 12-23 and maintained at 21-32 by the turn, but then the Silverbacks started to get the ball to drop, played some better defence and ended up winning by five.
Key stats:
Paul Howard top scored for the third time in his third game, Becky Wellington’s 3-pointer took her to double figures for the fourth time this season and Tim Tostevin weighed in with his best haul of the season. The team increased their foul shooting percentage to 50%, the minimum set for 2019, making six of 12, and they dropped four 3-pointers from three different players. For the second game running the Falcons had two players into double figures, but this was the second game running where the team lost by fewer than 10 points, and as such it was tough to take for the whole team.
Coach Walker’s assessment:
The Falcons played really well in the first half, scoring 15 and 17 in the first two periods, but a total of 16 in the second half, while conceding 32 was our undoing. So many good aspects of the game were really pleasing to note; things we have worked on in training and talked about before games like pressure on the opposition at our end, boxing out and making field goals and foul shots, however as the game reached its climax, and the pressure was on, too many passes went astray, too many shots missed the target and defence got ragged as a result of fatigue.
Thanks to Chris Giles for his assistance at the side and to Jack Allen for his stats during the Yateley game.
The Falcons face three teams for the first time in their next three fixtures, Woking, Farnborough and Slough, starting with a trip to Woking on the evening of Friday 25th – Burns Night.
Next game:
Friday 25th January 2019 at 7:30pm away to Woking Blackhawk Thunder in Division 3.
