Match summary:
Jags Coach Purvey stood in for John Walker and the Falcons took the game to the Cobras, running a tough man-to-man defence and restricting the Cobras to just 4 points in the first period, and 11 in the second. The half time talk from Coach Purvey inspired the team in the third period. Defence switched to zone and the Falcons went on a scoring spree with Matt Blowfield unstoppable under the basket, scoring 12 of his game-high 16 in this third period. The Cobras came back in the final 10 minutes, but after a well-timed time-out by Coach Purvey the Falcons the Falcons were re-ignited and won out by 16.
Key stats:
Matt Blowfield got 16 points in the game, backed up by Becky Wellington with 12 and Jack Allen, playing his first season for the Aztecs, getting 7.
Captain Upfold’s assessment:
I was really proud of the Falcons, with players listening and playing as a team. Ben Roberts controlled the game in the absence of a regular guard, Becky Wellington – the 2018 Falcons Player of the Year – played some excellent defence to add to her dozen points and Matt Blowfield got in the zone in the third period and secured the first victory for the Falcons in the league this season.
Next game:
Saturday 6th October away to Kennet Kingfishers at 2.30pm
