First set of games sees victory for ‘Aztecs 1’ and Storm
The competition is well underway here at Wellington College in the Richard Bell Tournament and the day has already seen victories for the ‘Aztecs 1’ and Storm teams.
The first games of the tournament (starting at 8:15am) saw Camden Panthers lose narrowly to Southampton University 12 points to 10.
On the other court, it was an all-Aztecs affair as the Suns played the Storm with the Storm coming out on top 17-11 in the shortened games of 8 minute halves.
The men’s tournament tipped off (at a slightly more respectable 9:25am for a Sunday morning!) and saw a local derby take place on court 1 as the ‘Aztecs 2’ took on Bracknell Cobras, featuring former Aztecs, Alex Taylor and Kerry Haynes and coached by Lisa Austin. Despite a strong second half performance, the ‘Aztecs 2’ fell slightly short, losing by 9, 20-11.
The ‘Aztecs 1’ started off their tournament campaign against Windsor Warriors and picked up a strong start, winning 25-20.
Coach Purvey commented
It was nice to have new recruits Harry Norris and Colin Sawford getting a run out with the team. Under the captaincy of Jared Adams, the team showed good promise of shooting the ball better this season.’
The next games up for Aztecs Suns and Storm are at 10:35am, when the Suns take on Southampton University and the Storm take on Camden Panthers in what could be a crucial in determining who finishes first (it is must win for Storm to come top of the group).
The Aztecs 1 look to extend continue their winning ways against Woodley 1 in what is likely to be a tough game inside at 11:10am and following on from that, the Aztecs 2 look to get off the mark against Standlakers at 11:45am.
