(11-15; 21-28;32-40)
Leading scorers:
Dan Warren and Tim Tostevin 10; Matt Blowfield 7; Becky Wellington 5
Match summary:
Without top-scorers Liam Payne and Ollie Horne, the Falcons slipped to 1 and 10 in the league after this entertaining game at Wellington College. The game started late and the Mohegans started quickly when they eventually arrived, leading by 6 after converting 4 of 12 foul shots and sinking a three-pointer. The second period saw the Falcons drop behind by 12 but then a stunning phase either side of the (very brief) half-time interval saw the Aztecs third string score 16 unanswered points to lead 30-28. During this period the Falcons did not foul and scored well from outside (including 2 triples) and inside.
Sadly, that was about as good as it got, as only one more score was added in the third period.
Tom Dawkes made his debut for the team, making one spectacular lay-up, and Justin Hopley returned from injury (sustained in the away fixture against the Mohegans onNovember 1). He marked it with one from three from down-town.
Key stats:
Tim Tostevin scored a season’s best 10 with his unique and very effective mid-range shot. Dan Warren hit with two triples, and it took Becky Wellington until the 5thminute of the final period to miss her first foul shot of the season.
Falcons committed 27 fouls which were punished with 18 points from 38 foul shots. 5 from 17 was the reply for the Aztecs team.
Coach Walker’s assessment:
We were up against it in this game without Liam and Ollie, but we had 10 scorers out of the 11 who played, and we did have chances to secure the win, but frustratingly came up short again.
Turn-overs and missed shots were key, and we also need to be smarter on D – and give away fewer silly fouls.
Next game:
